Some time ago, several prominent business figures generously shared in Göteborgsposten what they classified as their biggest managerial mistakes throughout their respective careers. Here is a summary of their reflections:
- SELF-CARE – LIVE LIFE IN BALANCE How important it is to maintain balance between all the essential ingredients of life. If it tips over in any direction, it will only be a matter of time before poor results occur everywhere.
- MOTIVATION How wrong it can be when you think everyone is motivated by the same things as yourself. Try to understand each individual in your team and what drives them, let go of your own perspective.
- DYNAMICS How foolish it can be when you seek mirror images of yourself instead of counterbalance and with that balance and complement.
- COMMUNICATION How inefficient, and ultimately unprofitable, it becomes when communication fails, both in small and large matters.
- TIME MANAGEMENT How stressed your employees become when you are unstructured and driven by events around you instead of owning the time and controlling what happens.
Two of the interviewees emphasize the importance of training and developing one’s leadership skills even as an experienced manager; everyone needs development. The importance of using some form of external sounding board is also highlighted as a key success factor.
