You need to get your priorities right…

Last week we wrote about taking the time to reflect on what it is we want in life. This is a great exercise to do, but sadly to say, it can sometimes be the case that the things we want are not always the things we get.

At some stage in your life, someone may have said to you that you need to get your priorities right. As to what our priorities are though can be a matter of opinion. Telling a 17-year old that they should be spending less time going out with their friends and spending more time on their studies might be the correct priority to the parent, but to the teenager, in search of meaningful friendship and acceptance, it is entirely wrong.

When it comes to prioritising, it is important to remember that everyone’s needs can be different. Imposing your will on other’s won’t get you far unless you can first manage to convince them that what it is you want really is the best for everyone. Over a lifetime our priorities can change many times, but as long as we keep our wants and needs clear to those around us and that we are open to discussion,  there is no reason as to why this should become a problem.

What is important to you? What is important to your career? What is important to your family? Finding the answers to these three questions and balancing them together can sometimes help us move forward and help us find out where our priorities really should lie.
